Passing The Scrum Foundation Professional Certification

The time has come for me to earn a certification. If you watched my YouTube Video “ Certifications To Bridge Your Transferable Skills Into Cybersecurity”.You will see that I have a Love and Hate relationship with certifications. In the cybersecurity world, most of the time certifications are a requirement for a role.

For instance, the CompTIA Security + is one of the many requirements to support the Department of Defense(DoD) positions. Thus, being a System Test Engineer, Program Analyst, and even now a Systems Engineer. I knew that if I earned that certification, I would NOT apply that to my daily work.

Thus, starting with the basics of learning Scrum was vital for me in my current role.  While searching on social media, I found this post facilitated by Teneika A. and provided by the American Chemical Society Georgia Chapter. A FREE 16-hour Scrum Foundation Certification traning with a FREE exam voucher. I saw this posting twice for two months, so I had to jump on it. It was a sign for me to take it!

The course started on Nov 14th from 10 am- 5 pm on a Saturday, Sunday 10 am-5 pm and Tuesday Thursday from 6:30 pm-8:30 pm.

Here are some things I enjoyed about the course structure

  • Emails were sent out before the event with all the information you need to get started
  • Used two different platforms for communication Zoom for presentations, breakout rooms, and Slack for reviews, questions quizzes, and networking with different people
  • Interactive course material and smooth sounds of the “ Scrum Playlist” in-between breaks

For this exam, Teneika emphasized that you must change your mindset to understand how Scrum is applied in different scenarios. During the course, there were many quizzes; and she explained each response. After testing my knowledge a few times with the practice exams. I knew I was ready to take the exam.

So, I took the exam and OMG I passed! I’m so proud of myself and I can apply what I learned at work. The next certifications are the Certified Scrum Master and then the SAFe Agile Certified Scrum Master. Along with the AWS Certified Cloud Practioner. Since these align with my overall career path, and growth in business processes and emerging technologies within Cybersecurity.

  1. Katia,
Thank you for sharing your certification story! Not only is it inspirational, but motivational as well! I am currently working to obtain my Security+, which is my first certification. Fortunately, yet unfortunately it is to simply fill a role. I am eager to obtain a Security role and see what will be next to explore, cert or not in this sector! Wishing you well on the next certs you are preparing for!

    1. Thank you for your feedback. Yes as I always say really focus on your ultimate career path. Research and then study for the certification THAT YOU ARE INTERESTED IN. I’m glad my story was inspirational as well.

  2. I’m getting my Master’s Degree in CyberSecurity and I just had to google what Scrum was. Once I read it, I realized it is more to do with development practices, but I hadn’t ever considered getting that certificate. By the end of this semester, I will (hopefully) have my Certified Ethical Hacker cert and by the time I’m done with the Master’s degree, I should be ready to take my CISSP exam.

If you don’t mind elaborating, why did you choose to get your SCRUM certificate? I just got my HITRUST CCSFP last month and I need to get some Cloud certs as well, probably starting with Azure since I’ve been doing cloud consulting there. I got my Security+ a couple years ago.

    1. Hello Matt,
I will have another blog to go more in-depth on Scrum and the concept. How that a Scrum Master relates to Cybersecurity so be on the lookout for more insight. Yes go for the Cloud certs! CLOUD is where it at!!!
