What I Learned From Changing My Job Search Method

Are you a cyber professional looking for a new position? Have you applied to numerous positions and feel defeated with the rejection emails? I can understand your pain. I wanted to partake in what I learned from changing my job-hunting method.  If you use some of these methods your job searching techniques can improve.

I was the typical job seeker only centered on the job title, however, I noticed the “job title” didn’t mean anything and I was discombobulated, because several companies had different responsibilities for the same title.  Then, I conducted more research about job seeking methods.

While conducting my research I found an article that cited these three tips, industry, company, and then role (in that order).  After interpreting the article, I put through those tips for a new position.

Applying these tips improved my job hunt and I landed a few interviews as well with an upcoming position.  Concentrating on an industry first, is important because this will specify where you will advance your knowledge and expertise .  Cyber professionals should consider these types of industries: Commercial Aviation, Financial Services, Healthcare, Defense and Space, Food Services, Government, Transportation etc.

Next, is the company.  From my experience size, company culture and values are important.  I worked for a huge about 1000+ people. Since I was already “IN” looking for a new position shouldn’t be too hard.

Well, in that type of environment, I was just a number.  When it was time to look for a new position due to a contract ending, I had to look outside of the company.

Since I didn’t want to be a number again my next position was for a smaller company about 50-200 people. I personally enjoyed working for this type of company because of the company’s values, cultural you can grow with the company, and volunteering events for the company.

Finally, the role should be a cyber professional last focus area because, this is where you can determine growth from entry-level up to manager level.

I was successful with this method of job searching.  Even though I’m currently awaiting my new position. This method was a success than just the typical “oh let me just focus on the job title”.
